Festivities of December in Elche (Alicante)

The guided tours of Elche and Costa Blanca have a particular interest during the end of each year, because of the festivities of December in Elche. The week from Christmas to New Year performs an excellent atmosphere in the city of Elche. On these dates, we feast the Festivities of the “Venida de la Virgen.” They honour the appearance of the Virgin of the Assumption in an ark, found by the Coast Guard Francesc Cantó.

December 28th, 1370, Francesc Cantó discovered in the waters offshore a chest containing an image of La Virgen de la Asunción (Our Lady of the Assumption). Since then, every 28th of December, Cantó arrives on horseback as he announces his discovery to the local authorities. The image of Our Lady gets in procession the Basilica of Santa María. A commemorative parade takes place from Santa Pola to Elche.

These days of festivities of December in Elche are specially indicated to enjoy guided tours for groups with Tortuga Tours. You can use our form to request information.
